The final work (the arrangement) is inspired by one of the artist, Ahmet Ogut’s work that he had shown in his talk when I went to the “seen” exhibition on 3rd of May after class. I want to express my identity through this arrangement.

Wrapping

I started out drawing a barcode according to my birthday 13th March 2001, which makes 13032001. Then expanded the barcode to be on a product which is the wrapping on the tin can. I chose to use white paper and black pen for the wrapping because it shows that I am quite a boring person, well at least that’s how I feel about myself. And also I’m a quiet person, so it reflects on the wrapping that nothing too crazy is going on about me. Same goes to the crumpled paper, i did that to show that it’s flowing out of the tin can.

I wrote my name in different languages on the wrapping. In English as the main product name, and then Chinese, Korean and Arabic. I learnt how to write my name in Korean from my Korean friend back in secondary school. As for Arabic, I learnt that school and my Emirates ID as I’ve studied in Abu Dhabi, UAE for 3 to 4 years.

As I’ve mentioned that I studied and lived abroad, in order to show my originality, I wrote “Imported from Malaysia” as I am a Malaysian abroad.

Arrangement

Moving onto the arrangement, I made it look like the things are spilling out of the can. First of all, I have an earphone, music note and the word “KPOP” to visualise my love on enjoying music. Not only KPOP but also pop punk, but I started off only listen to KPOP before i discovered pop punk so I decided to only include that word. There’s also a symbol that looks like a diamond with horns, that is actually called an “angelic rune” from the mortal instruments novel series written by Cassandra Clare. I enjoy and love the tv show that is based on the novels called “Shadowhunters” so I decided to include that in my arrangement as well.

Next is art, I have my favorite round brush and colour swatches from my watercolor palette. As I’m comfortable and like to work with watercolor compare to other media.

There’s also my name and nicknames that my friends occasionally use to call me. Wen Yi is not that commonly used in the past few years, only recently moving back here to Malaysia that it’s used. Soo Jin is originated from my math teacher who called me Soo Jin by mistake twice in class. My friends sometimes call me by that name for fun. Sea Urchin was something that we randomly made up, although it’s not frequently used compare to Soo Jin, it’s still fun a fun nickname that i have. Soo on the other hand, stuck with me everywhere I’ve gone. It started out in year 9 on my first day of school, where I had to do a self introduction to the class. As my name was consist of 3 characters my teacher called me “Soo Wen” because she thought my surname was “Yi”. But after correction, I’m being called Soo because it’s easier for them to remember and pronounce compare to Wen Yi.

Last but not least, there’s a brown and green envelope. They’re both letters from my friends, when I left Abu Dhabi, which is very nice of them to do that. I brought the letters back with me because my friends taught me the importance of friendship. Fun fact, the green envelope is written by the same Korean friend that taught me how to write my name in Korean. She wanted me to master and polish my Korean understanding skills, so she wrote the entire letter completely in Korean and noted that i can’t use translator. I understand most of the letter as I know how to read Korean but there are still words that I don’t understand. That makes me want to further learn Korean. Overall the letters leads to my feelings when I read messages that they’ve written, so I added the word “emotions”. I also wanted to include that word because I am a pretty emotional person.

This is the barcode that I've created for an idea, later I used in the final piece on the wrapping of the can.

That basically sums sup who I am, through my arrangement. Thank you for reading!
